Tara Canyon

If you ever have the opportunity to visit Tara Canyon, do it.

Words cannot describe how beautiful it is. Dramatic green mountains surround you while a crystal clear, perfectly turquoise river rushes in the valley.

We got a bus from Podgorica through the most breathtaking scenery..

..before getting a bit of a shock when we reached border control! It turned out that the river is the border between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina and to our surprise we were staying on the Bosnia side. So feeling very confused with an extra stamp on our passport we entered Bosnia and soon arrived at our camp site.

We were staying in these adorable little wooden cabins. Inside there was barely enough room for our tiny beds and backpacks so we lay out in the sun and had a lovely relaxing afternoon.

I should probably mention that we were in Tara Canyon to go white water rafting! We stayed in the Tara Drina Rafting Centre. There seemed to be lots of these little campsites dotted along the river bank but I would have to say they couldn't beat Tara Drina purely because of the FOOD! Just look at this feast.

For dinner on our first night we were presented with the most amazing meal including perfect crispy potatoes, vine leaves, cheese filled pastry rolls and the best bit - a meat platter with burgers, schnitzel, chicken and the local speciality of cevapi. It was delicious and the perfect end to our day.

The next morning we rolled out of our little cabin and headed straight for breakfast and we were in for a treat.

The view was gorgeous and the food wasn't bad either.

We had another meat platter, fried eggs, cherry compote, cheese and the most amazing sweet doughnut style rolls. We filled ourselves up and then it was rafting time!

We paddled our way down the river for hours, stopping off half way for a quick dip in the freezing cold waterfall.

I had never rafted before and I absolutely loved it. Ours was a pretty calm rafting experience with pretty gentle rapids, although I did manage to fall in! After another relaxed evening and amazing dinner it was time for an early night. The next morning we packed up our bags, took a few last minute photos and then said goodbye to our home in the middle of nowhere to move on to our next destination.
